Notícies: CRAG Scientist Josep Casacuberta comments on the European decision on CRISPR techniques at the Information and Scientific News Service (SINC).

The European Court of Justice has published this week its decision on the interpretation of Directive 2001/18 / EC on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as regards the regulation of new CRISPR gene editing techniques. The court considers that the organisms obtained with this technique are similar to GMOs and should be subject to the same complex, expensive and long process of approval.

In practice, this decision may end up restricting the commercial use of these techniques to large agri-food multinationals leaving European breeders and seed companies and, in general, the European agri-food sector aside from scientific progress.
