Sònia García holds a PhD in Pharmacy with a specialization in Botany and has been working at the Institut Botànic de Barcelona (IBB) since 2015. However, she had previously worked at this institution under a CSIC postdoctoral contract (JAE-Doc) between 2008 and 2011 and conducted part of her doctoral thesis at the IBB between 2005 and 2007.

Her current research focuses on the structure and organization of ribosomal DNA in different plant species, within the fields of evolutionary biology and conservation biology. She is a Ramón y Cajal Researcher and a member of the Biodiversity and Plant Biosystematics Research Group (GReB). Her research is part of the Evolutionary Biology, Genome Organization, and Plant Uses group.
