FITOMATICS: a project aimed to obtain natural fragrances and antimicrobial compoundsThis disruptive project with the objective to create sustainable and environmentally-friendly products has caught the attention of some media
The Spanish newspapers El Periódico and Expansión have announced that the project FITOMATICS has been awarded more than one million euros by the Retos-Colaboración 2017 Programme from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities .
This project, coordinated by the fragrance company CARINSA and with participation of the CRAG and the technological institute LEITAT, aims to isolate and characterize the microorganisms that live in endemic aromatic plants of the Mediterranean region. As the economy website Economía de hoy points out, the FITOMATICS project represents a big step towards obtaining compounds of interest without the need to over-exploit natural resources, and preventing costly synthetic laboratory procedures.
UB professors at CRAG Teresa Altabella and Albert Ferrer, along with their colleagues at the Isoprenoid Metabolism research group, will contribute with their valuable experience to this outstanding R&D project.
