News: CRAG recognized with the prestigious “Severo Ochoa” Center of Excellence Award
The Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) CSIC-IRTA-UAB-UB has been recognized with the “Severo Ochoa” Center of Excellence award, in the latest call of this prestigious program. The "Severo Ochoa” program, from the “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad”, is aimed at recognizing Centres that perform cutting-edge research and are among the world's best in their respective areas. This award places CRAG among the top research centers in Spain. CRAG will receive 1M€ per year during the next four years to expand and consolidate its leadership in its research areas. With this award, CRAG becomes the first Severo Ochoa Center that is entirely dedicated to Plant and Agricultural (including farm animal) Biology.
Addressing many of the challenges that human societies will face in coming decades (e.g., climate change and increased weather variability and their consequences; the increasing demand on agricultural products and natural resources -food, feed, and fiber- at the global scale; agricultural sustainability; or the preservation of the ecosystems on which societies depend, to name a few) will crucially depend on plant research at multiple levels. As recently stated in an Editorial in Nature (21 July 2015), "The future of global agriculture is one of the most urgent issues in a warming world. Farmers must prepare for, and adapt to, a changed climate that is likely to feature more erratic rainfall, temperature extremes, drought, soil erosion, invasive weeds and durable pests. Science, error bars included, has much to offer these efforts".
